Before Vicki Jones’ grandmother Esmee died in September, music was the only real method Vicki had to reach Esmee through the dementia that plagued her. Big band show aids music therapy program
A fundraiser to help keep Parkview Home’s music therapy program takes place Oct. 26, at 7:30 p.m. at Parkview Village. After Hours Big Band, a jazz ensemble, will provide entertainment. Research has shown that Alzheimer patients in long-term care homes benefit by having a connection with music, either performed live or through various mediums such as television, radio or CDs. Dr. Deforia Lane is the Associate Director of the Seidman Cancer Center and Director of Music Therapy at University Hospitals of Cleveland. Dr. Lane will be on campus at on Tuesday, October 20th, where she will be delivering a public lecture on music therapy and inter-professional health care in Baker Center Theater from 4- 5:00 pm. Her visit is sponsored by the OU School of Music, the Translational Biomedical Sciences program, the Barbara Geralds Institute for Storytelling and Social Impact, and the Vice-President for Research and Creative Activity. Berkley music therapy studio gives everyone a voice

BERKLEY, Mich. (WJBK) – “When I was in school they told me that I wouldn’t be able to do music or anything,” says Jesse Sparks. He has cerebal palsy and other developmental delays, and has always wanted to ray. “It’s all about proving people wrong. AUSTIN — Musicians are set to perform Oct. 17 to benefit an organization that helps children with brain injuries. Brianna Dupuie, 8, is among the musicians who will take the stage in hopes of earning studio time like this. In reality she’s already won. “She’s a miracle. She’s just a miracle,” said mom Dena Dupuie. “Doctors tell us she was within minutes of dying when she arrived at the hospital and now look at her.” Read more here…
Music therapy changing behaviours of those with special needs

Guitars hang on the walls in musician Chris Trigg’s Victoria home as he begins to play Hallelujah on his acoustic guitar. His daughter Bear begins to sing the lyrics. This is the first time she’s spoken in 22 years. “When this happened it was like ‘oh my god’,” said Trigg, founder and director of the Mighty Hughs Foundation, a charitable foundation providing therapeutic music programs to the special needs community in Greater Victoria.
