The 14th annual Music Therapy Ride hits the road this weekend. And in keeping with their aims, music will be a part of the ride up the Sea to Sky Highway. “We’re going to fill up the base of the GLC again with motorcycles and we’re bringing the country band High Valley and the wonderful Shaun Verreault from Wide Mouth Mason,” organizer Patrick Zulinov says.”It’s coming together nicely. We always hope for more and appreciate any contributions people have. Quite a few people believe in what we are doing.” Read more here

Patrick Zulinov has seen the impact of music therapy up close. “Whether it’s a kid in the burn ward who just needs something uplifting or it’s seniors who could be suffering from Alzheimer’s, it works,” he said. He also recalled observing a spinal-injury patient at G.F. Strong Rehabilitation Centre who resisted treatment but “beat the hell out of some drums to get his anger out. Through that, the music therapist worked with him to get his rhythm and motion going, and it was amazing to see what they did. Read more here

Playing music while patients are having surgery can ease their pain and anxiety, even if patients are completely unconscious, researchers reported Wednesday. They didn’t directly study the effects of music on pain but collated the results of 72 different studies that did.
