Music therapy increases effectiveness of rehabilitation

Researchers at the Louis Armstrong Center of Music and Medicine at Mount Sinai Beth Israel (MSBI) published their findings in Respiratory Medicine. They suggest that music therapy could be an effective addition to traditional treatment for those with COPD. She explained that care of the chronically ill is moving towards ways to preserve and enhance quality of life of patients through daily activities that feed into their culture, motivations, caregiver/home trends and perceptions of daily wellness routines. Music therapists’ 5-year push for state certification continues
Currently children under the age of 3 are unable to receive aid for music therapy. State-assisted programs including First Steps and the use of Department of Mental Health waivers don’t recognize music therapy as a treatment option in part because there’s no state licensing to ensure the practice’s legitimacy. “It is not simply a musician coming in to play, it is a health-care professional coming in who has been trained on the impact of music on the brain or the other body systems regarding pain and Alzheimer’s and memory and with autistic children,” said Swan. Music Therapy Group Receive Changemaker Award

Dr. Laura Beer, Lillieth Grand and Jodi Winnwalker received the 2015 Changemaker Award for Music Therapy Advocacy from the American Music Therapy Association. “Our success in achieving state licensure is deeply appreciated by AMTA national leaders,” said Dr. Beer. She wished to recognize other Oregon music therapists who were also presented with the Changemaker Award: Dawn Iwamasa, Melissa Potts, Chris Korb and Ted Owen, who holds a certificate in music therapy from Marylhurst University. A study led by researchers at University Hospitals of Cleveland showed music therapy significantly decreased preoperative anxiety levels among women undergoing surgery for diagnosis or treatment of breast cancer.
