When I was a child, on most Fridays, my dad, mom, brother and I would travel to Cape Cod to visit my grandparents. For my father, this drive would come after a long day of work, during which he had already commuted from our home, an hour outside of the city, to Boston, where he worked as an accountant, and back home again. He was an intense man, and during these drives to the Cape we were often silent, on edge – unsure how to interpret his sullen and grave demeanor. Read more here

In mid-January, Björk—the Icelandic singer, songwriter, producer, creative polymath, and cultural provocateur—rush-released her newest album, “Vulnicura,” after it was leaked online. Stealing Björk tracks feels like a particular sacrilege—it’s one thing for pirates to attack the corporate battleship that is Madonna, but, for Björk fans, taking from her is trampling on sacred ground. The artist handled the situation with her usual equanimity, insisting to her longtime label, One Little Indian, that it release the whole album as a complete work rather than pre-releasing a few singles. When music therapist, Nicola Oddy moved to Perth in 1991 services began at the first Tayside Community home almost immediately. Some of those residents are still receiving those services today. Since then, Tayside Community Options has blossomed to 5 homes in Perth and Music Therapy has been a part of the offerings to residents every step of the way. At the present time they are being offered by newly accredited Rachelle Reinhart and Music Therapy intern, Annabelle Brault.  Read more here

A little bit of country strummed into Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital Friday, March 6 when singer Gord Bamford donated funds to the hospital’s music therapy program. Wearing a black cowboy hat, black leather jacket and jeans, the 19-time Canadian Country Music Association award winner spoke of how he and his wife spent time at Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary when their daughter, Memphis, now five, was born with an imperforate anus. The little girl spent a week at the hospital following surgery and has made a full recovery. Read more here

PostHeaderIcon ABC’s David Muir Names Music Therapists ‘Persons of the Week’

Just last week, David Muir celebrated all music therapists as Persons of the Week on his ABC World News Tonight broadcast. He highlighted the work of several music therapists around the country but focused primarily on that of Maegan Morrow, MT-BC, at TIRR Memorial Hermann Rehabilitation and Research Hospital in Houston. Morrow, co-treating with several speech/language pathologists, helped Congresswoman Gabby Giffords in the process of regaining her speech following her traumatic brain injury that resulted from the tragic shooting in Tucson four years ago. The Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) of the Mumbai Police has roped in a city-based event manager and musician to tackle the rising incidence of drug abuse among the youth. Roshan Mansukhani (43) runs an academy for aspiring disc jockeys in Andheri and will volunteer at the ANC’s Drug Free Campus initiative in city colleges. Read more here
