Music therapy helps patients one note at a time

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Being in the hospital is no fun. Now, a type of therapy at IU Health is helping patients cope with illnesses and treatments one note at a time. As patients and visitors walk down the hallways of the Simon Cancer Center, or even University Hospital, it’s not uncommon to hear a guitar, some singing and even laughter. It’s not a record player. Music therapy clinical trial will prove positive intervention for autistic children

Music therapist Dr Grace Thompson says the ground-breaking connections she’s forged with special-needs children throughout her 20-year music therapy career typify the general experience of music therapists. Thompson, who specialises in assisting special-needs children to interact with their families and communities through music-making, says she’ll often gently play her guitar to capture the attention of children who are otherwise displaying no interest in engaging with the people around them. Music therapy presentation and workshop scheduled in Oklahoma City

A presentation on music therapy for those working with the special needs community will be given at 10 a.m. Saturday at SixTwelve, 612 NW 29. The presentation by Zetta Music Therapy will focus on how to incorporate adaptive techniques into music education, as well as an introduction to the medical practice of music therapy. Music Therapy Bill Passes Senate Hurdle

A bill that would require music therapists in Florida to get a state license passed a State Senate committee. The bill was unanimously approved by the Senate Health Policy committee Tuesday. Music therapists with specific education and training to help patients cope and heal from a variety of illnesses are currently certified by a national board.

When we think of the music that defined the ’90s, Alanis Morissette’s iconic album “Jagged Little Pill,” which sold more than 33 million copies worldwide, easily makes the list. An entire generation of listeners felt the singer/songwriter’s angst-ridden and unapologetic debut album spoke directly to them. Western Michigan University music therapy major Leah Brown gives an instrument to a resident at Amber Way of the Heritage Community in Kalamazoo, MI on Thursday February 26, 2015. Amber Way provides residents suffering from Alzheimer’s and dementia with music therapy twice a week.
