DURHAM, N.C. – Focus can be a real struggle for people with learning disabilities like ADHD and ADD, but music is being found to be a powerful tool to train minds. Middle school student Thomas Beckman has the developmental disability Down syndrome and uses music to help him focus. Wendy Mitchell has been living her life like one of those canvases you put in a spin-art machine. She moves at high speed, drenching herself in community and color — even dying her hair a bright, fiery red. “Normally it’s brown with red highlights,” said Mitchell, whose sister owns Salon Kamala in Bethel and usually cuts and colors it for her. Music Therapy Bill Passes California State Assembly, Faces Upcoming Senate Challenge

Bradford music therapy trust awarded nearly half a million by Big Lottery Fund

A MUSIC therapy project that helps people cope with mental illnesses in Bradford on Avon has been awarded nearly half a million pounds by the Big Lottery Fund to go towards its new outreach programme. The Soundwell Music Therapy Trust, based at Wiltshire Music Centre, was just one of 12 organisations in the region to be awarded grants which totalled nearly £4m. Read more here…
Simple Plan donates $5K to Montreal Children’s music therapy program

The Montreal band Simple Plan is donating $5,000 to the Montreal Children’s Hospital’s music therapy program. The money will be used to purchase new instruments, some of which will be easier to clean and ensure there is no cross-contamination between rooms.
