Using music to heal: Altru’s first music therapist brings skills to patients

Sitting near a hospital bed at Altru Hospital, Leslie Saulsbury spreads the tools of her trade on the blanket in front of 7-year-old Josiah Green. The assorted music-making instruments include a portable keyboard, maracas, tambourine and a wooden stick with hinged, cup-shaped clappers that, when shaken, sound like horses’ hooves on pavement. Music therapy aids dementia sufferers

Before Vicki Jones’ grandmother Esmee died in September, music was the only real method Vicki had to reach Esmee through the dementia that plagued her. Since Esmee died, Vicki has used the inheritance to form the Music Moves Me Trust to help other families utilise music to interact with loved ones affected by dementia. Read more here…

The Sixth Annual Genesis doctors in recital was held at First Presbyterian Church this afternoon. Doctors and musicians performed, singing and playing instruments. Big band show aids music therapy program
A fundraiser to help keep Parkview Home’s music therapy program takes place Oct. 26, at 7:30 p.m. at Parkview Village. After Hours Big Band, a jazz ensemble, will provide entertainment. Research has shown that Alzheimer patients in long-term care homes benefit by having a connection with music, either performed live or through various mediums such as television, radio or CDs. Music Therapist Dr. Deforia Lane Will Be On Campus Oct. 19 and 20

Dr. Deforia Lane is the Associate Director of the Seidman Cancer Center and Director of Music Therapy at University Hospitals of Cleveland. Dr. Lane will be on campus at on Tuesday, October 20th, where she will be delivering a public lecture on music therapy and inter-professional health care in Baker Center Theater from 4- 5:00 pm. Her visit is sponsored by the OU School of Music, the Translational Biomedical Sciences program, the Barbara Geralds Institute for Storytelling and Social Impact, and the Vice-President for Research and Creative Activity.
