Music therapy offers creative outlet for youth in detention center

Through a long-standing partnership with the Delaware County Juvenile Detention Center, graduate students in Drexel’s music therapy and counseling program are helping to bring joy, a creative outlet and—most importantly—music, to an adolescent population whose current circumstances are uncertain. Those uncertain circumstances often create a great deal of anxiety among the adolescents there. Read more here…

EMU gets $3.26 million gift to support special education, music therapy

Bill and Delores Brehm just became the largest donors in Eastern Michigan University history after donating $3.26 million to support students in special education and music therapy. To date, their gifts total more than $8.5 million to the Ypsilanti school. Read more here…
Music therapy session organized by Leadership Lorain County class

LORAIN — They say music is good for the soul and those words appeared to be backed up Friday as more than a dozen men and women danced, clapped and belted out songs Friday at the Gathering Hope House. The music therapy session for those recovering from varying forms of mental illnesses was brought to the facility as one of two community service projects undertaken this summer by 26 college students taking part in the Leadership Lorain County intern class of 2015. PADUCAH, Ky. — The two boys at Harmony Road Music School banged on the drums, shook rain sticks and rattles, and tried to pick out tunes on the piano. If it didn’t resemble a typical music lesson, that’s because it wasn’t. Instructor Madison Whelan’s musical games were meant to help the students develop skills that can be used outside of music, such as impulse control and communication. Read more here…
Letting patients be kids during music therapy

Every morning at 11:30 they come for a chance to sing along and play a song — maybe bang a bongo or two. At the UC Davis Children’s Hospital, the patients have few moments to enjoy being a kid while they are being poked and prodded as they deal with health issues that are tough even for grownups. Acadiana comes together to unite, honor, heal

The community showed their support through prayer and song at the Lafayette Strong: Unite. Honor. Heal. event held at the Blackham Coliseum. With hands raised and hearts opened, the community honored those involved in the Grand Theatre shooting. The Lafayette Consolidated Government put the event together in just two days. A BRITISH study which saw dementia patients undergo music therapy resulted in improvements to their symptoms and wellbeing as well as a reduction in disruptiveness to staff at their care home. MUSIC therapy has long been known to help people with conditions such as dementia, as music appears to be able reach parts of the damaged brain in ways other forms of communication cannot.
