St. Cloud State Students Relax With Music Therapy [VIDEO]

ST. CLOUD – The world drumming group at St. Cloud State University is working on their drumming circle to help people relax. Last semester they hosted a relaxation chamber, which gave students a chance to sit down, breathe, and meditate. Dr. Terry Vermillion got the idea from watching a percussionist duo perform at a spa in Switzerland.

Music Therapy Shown to Ease Depression in Kids, Teens

A new study suggests music therapy may be used to reduce depression in children and adolescents with behavioral and emotional problems. Researchers at Queen’s University Belfast found children who received music therapy had significantly improved self-esteem and significantly reduced depression compared with those who received treatment without music therapy. Los Angeles (KABC) — Oscar winner Anne Hathaway not only stars in, but is also one of the producers of the new romantic drama “Song One.” The team who brought the film to life is a tight-knit group. Marylhurst University launches new music therapy master’s program: one of the first in the N.W.

The field of music therapy is growing, and Oregon’s Marylhurst University (located just 10 minutes south of Portland) is addressing the demand for highly qualified music therapists by launching one of the N.W. region’s first music therapy master’s programs. Approved by the American Music Therapy Association and North America Schools of Music, the program starts classes this September, and is now accepting applications for the fall cohort.
