Filmmaker Michael Rossato-Bennett had planned to film Dan Cohen, a social worker and founder of the nonprofit organization Music & Memory, for a single day. Cohen had wanted to document his nascent program for elders with dementia who were springing back to life at a Brooklyn nursing home. Rossato-Bennett found himself crafting a story of music and memory around Cohen’s objective to bring personalized music to every individual in nursing homes throughout America. ORMOND BEACH, Fla. Marvin Sherzer didn’t touch the piano keys for more than four decades. Today, the 67-year-old certified music practitioner provides soothing sounds to patients recovering at Florida Hospital Oceanside after taking a 46-year hiatus from the instrument. Children up to age five and their parents are invited to participate in a free music class at the United Methodist Church of Monroe on July 9. Connecticut Music Therapy Services, LLC will be offering a demonstration class from the award-winning early childhood music program, Sprouting Melodies.
